Yingjing Black Sand Clay Soup Pot - Handmade Sichuan ICH Cookware

What Is an Yingjing Black Sand Clay Pot?

Yingjing black sand clay pots come from Yingjing County in Ya'an, Sichuan — a pottery town that has been firing this particular black clay for centuries. Each pot is shaped by hand and fired at over 1,300°C, which is what gives the body its deep charcoal-black colour and its dense, hard-wearing surface. No glaze and no chemical coating is used at any stage.

This is a piece of Sichuan Intangible Cultural Heritage cookware, and it is still made the way it always has been: by hand, in small batches, using clay dug locally.

Officially Recognised Heritage

Yingjing black sand clay carries formal national recognition that few cookware materials in the world can claim:

  • Listed in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage directory in 2013
  • Awarded National Geographical Indication Protected Product status in 2013
  • Recognised under the title “Hometown of China's Black Sand” — a designation held only by Yingjing

In practice this means the clay, the firing method and the place of origin are all officially protected and documented — you are not buying a generic “clay pot”, you are buying a product with a registered regional identity.

Why It Cooks Differently

  • Excellent heat retention — the thick black clay walls hold heat far longer than thin metal, so soups keep simmering gently after the flame is turned down.
  • Enhances the flavour of ingredients — slow, even heat draws out depth from bones, mushrooms and roots rather than boiling it away.
  • Made from 100% natural black clay, with no glaze and no chemical additives.
  • Durable and long-lasting — with normal care, these pots are passed down rather than replaced.

Unglazed vs. Glazed: Why It Matters for Your Food

The most important difference between this pot and a cheap supermarket sand pot is what is not on it.

This Yingjing pot: naturally non-coated and free from any chemical additives, made from natural materials using traditional techniques.

Many glazed sand pots: the interior glaze may contain substances that can leach out during cooking. A glazed surface looks smooth, but it has fine pores that trap and retain tastes and odours over time — which is why an old glazed pot can start to affect the flavour of everything you cook in it.

An unglazed black clay pot seasons the way a good wok does: it improves with use.

About the Surface: These Are Not Defects

Because there is no glaze to hide behind, the raw character of the material is visible. You may see:

  • Colour spots and lighter patches
  • A coarse, slightly uneven texture
  • Small pits and tiny surface bubbles
  • Fine hairline cracks in the surface layer

These are natural characteristics of the raw clay and of traditional firing, not faults, and they do not affect how the pot performs. Every pot that leaves us is checked, safe to cook in, and non-toxic.

How to Use It

  • Suitable for open flame — gas hob and open fire are both fine.
  • Not suitable for the microwave.
  • Always heat it gradually. Start on a low flame and bring the temperature up slowly, and let the pot cool down before washing.
  • Hand wash with warm water and a soft brush. Avoid sudden temperature changes, which is what cracks clay — never plunge a hot pot into cold water.

What It Is Best For

This is a slow-cooking pot, and slow cooking is where it earns its place: Sichuan-style herbal soups and broths, long-simmered bone stocks, clay-pot rice, braised pork and beef, and winter stews. If you already cook with a Chinese hot pot base, a black clay pot is the traditional companion for the clear-soup end of the table — the pot you use when you want the broth itself to taste of something.

Buying an Yingjing Black Sand Clay Pot in the UK

These pots are handmade in Sichuan and shipped directly to the UK by air freight, normally arriving within 8–12 calendar days. Because they are heavy, hand-thrown pieces rather than moulded export goods, sizes and surface character vary slightly from pot to pot — which is exactly what you would see buying one in Yingjing itself.

Read the product images carefully: the measurements shown in the size chart are the ones to order by. If you are unsure which size suits your household, email support@mixdiff.com and we will help you choose.
